Executive Search Case Study: Chief Digital and Transformation Officer for United Lex
UnitedLex (ULX), a leading global legal services provider, engaged Higher Talent (HT) to fill its new Chief Digital and Transformation Officer role. To identify candidates that possessed the requisites skills, competencies, and experience required HT to look well beyond “the usual suspects” within the legal industry. Another challenge was to convince senior level executives from business and technology to consider transitioning to the traditionally conservative, insular legal industry.
Higher Talent (Legal Business Search) was retained to lead an international search for this newly designed position. In collaboration with ULX, we built the position prospectus, detailing the core competencies required of this new hire. While there was no existing blueprint for this role, we probed into:
- “where will we find someone who can help to provide infrastructure and a business use case to sell digital transformation journeys?
- who can leverage successful business development experiences at the highest level?
- who can articulate a new paradigm in an old/parochial vertical?”
Higher Talent searched many highly regulated verticals to identify those who had built relationships at the C-Suite level and who had been selling enterprise solutions. Most importantly, we became sufficiently acquainted with our candidates to parse out whether they had the intellectual agility to leverage their expertise and experience in this newly created role. An entrepreneurial spirit, energy, and cultural fit were additional key requisites.
After an extensive international search that produced three outstanding finalist candidates, ULX hired David Edelheit. He has more than 20 years of business transformation experience with some of the world’s leading organizations. Most recently, he was the global business leader of Genpact’s Transformation Services business, where he set and led strategy for digital and analytics, customer experience, and industry advisory services that enabled the digital transformation of the firm’s top-tier clients. Previously, Edelheit was COO and transformation leader of PwC’s global advisory business, guiding a complex transformation resulting in new firm offerings, services, and delivery structures—bringing a truly macro approach to their diverse, international client base.
