Turning the page on the New Year is an appropriate time to reflect upon some changes, challenges, and opportunities in our industry. The key drivers of change—warp-speed advances in technology, the global financial crisis and its impact on the way goods and services are bought and sold, and social media are impacting multiple industries—including executive search. ‘More with less’ and ‘faster, better, cheaper’ are mantras that everyone is well-acquainted with.
Even as technology becomes more enmeshed in our personal and professional lives, it cannot substitute for differentiated practice excellence—knowing the industry, exercising sound judgment based upon experience, ‘people skills,’ and instilling confidence in candidates and clients. Technology and process enable an organization to leverage those skills—and to enhance efficiency, create greater transparency, compress delivery times, create closer alignment between client and search firm, and reduce cost. A differentiated search firm combines practice excellence and delivery capability to recruit impactful talent for its clients.
Technology has many salutary effects upon executive search firms that use it effectively, but it is ultimately only as material as the task to which it is deployed. So, for example IT can assist the search professional to sift through large databases of prospective candidates and enable clients to monitor progress on a real-time basis. It cannot, however, replace the elite professional’s ability to persuade prospects who are not seeking a move to consider one or to make critically important judgment calls on transferability of skillsets and experiences or cultural fit with the client. Higher Talent has coupled process management and technology to compress the searchable universe of prospective candidates, compress delivery cycles, and reduce cost.
It is for these reasons that after fifteen years representing many of the leading nonprofits across the country we have decided to change the Higher Talent tag line from “It Takes Talent to Find Talent” to “It Takes Talent to RECRUIT Talent”. We meld differentiated practice expertise with technology and process to engage, cultivate, and recruit top talent that will be impactful in advancing the mission of our clients. While technology platforms like LinkedIn have made it easier to “find” talent, our new tag line reflects the ongoing need for professional expertise in “recruiting” talent.
